EDAM Director Sinan Ülgen gave remarks to The Wall Street Journal on Türkiye’s evolving position within NATO and the implications of the close relationship between Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Donald Trump. Ülgen assessed Türkiye’s role in managing transatlantic tensions and in limiting the potentially disruptive effects of President Trump’s approach to the Alliance. He also underlined how the “Erdoğan factor” could help prevent disagreements between Washington and its European allies from becoming overly toxic. The article further examined Türkiye’s growing diplomatic influence, expanding defence-industrial capacity, and increasingly central role in regional crises from Ukraine to Iran and Gaza.
